Take the ferry across to Dartmouth for a stroll around the shops and choose restaurants or tea rooms, don’t forget Salcombe Dairy Ice cream (the best around), Sloping Deck café really does slope! Walk to the castle, or just watch the boats go by, but look out for seagulls, especially if you have food!

Drive over ferry to Blackpool sands, (fine shingle) with award winning Venus café, safe beach ideal for children or a little further on is Slapton (pebbles, dog friendly) site of the WWII military exercise Tiger, historic and interesting, with Slapton Ley, natural freshwater lake with many species of birds. There are lovely coastal walks from here too.

We love Bantham (sand dunes) and Bigbury beaches (Venus café), with Burgh Island where you can take a light lunch at the Pilchard Inn (hotel on island is residents only). When the tide is in a sea tractor takes you across to the island, great fun for the children and adults alike.

Salcombe is another favourite, about 35 minutes away by car, use park and ride in high season, boutique shops, beautiful estuary location with another National Trust Overbecks with stunning views and tropical gardens, it seems to have its own micro climate. Passenger ferry across to East Portlemouth & Mill Bay beaches or hire boats to pootle about in. Other beaches are North and South Sands with The Winking Prawn restaurant/café.

Paignton Zoo a must for families, about 15 minute drive, all the animal and wildlife you would expect and more, the Red Panda is my favourite. A little further on is Torquay with Geopark status, Living Coasts (affiliated with the zoo), housing penguins and other coastal wildlife. The ‘English Riviera’ with red sandy beach and lots of interesting coves if you want to get away from the crowds, Ansteys cove, Babbacombe and Oddicombe. Theatre in Torquay hosts summer shows and local theatre productions as well as the better known ones.

Steam train to Paignton with a beach stop along the way, a great way to travel, however we prefer visiting Totnes (bit far by train), you can take a boat up the river Dart or travel by car. Shops galore, many ethical and quirky, with Elizabethan market May- Sept every Tuesday.

We love Rockfish in Dartmouth, order to avoid takeaway queues or pre-book restaurant, great fish and atmosphere too.

Café Alf Resco does amazing breakfasts and lunches, closes at 2pm. Royal Castle Hotel is good for Sunday lunch and Saveurs serves amazing pastries and cakes, a must! The Sloping Deck really does slope and has a good bakery too, loads more places we could mention, Dartmouth has amazing places to eat.
